Al and Karen hosted a driving demo at their farm for RTA members. Al's Halflinger Comet was our driving horse extraordinnaire for the demo.
Al and Lisa gave a brief talk on driving safety and qualities to look for in a good driving horse. The importance of a suitable and well trained driving horse was explained. The most important gait of a driving horse is a perfect "whoa and stand" for safety reasons when putting the horse to a cart. Also critical for when climbing into or out of the the cart or carriage as that is when you as the handler/driver and passengers are most vulnerable.
Al and Karen have a fine collection of 2 and 4 wheel which Al showcased to our audience. His collection includes an Amish Carrige, Meadowbrook and 4 wheel wagonette. Al also pointed out the parts and function of the harness components, and showed how to properly harness up, then put the horse to the wagon.
Attendees were then invited to go for a ride in the wagonette and even take the reins.
Many thanks to Al and Karen for hosting and educating our participants!
